New Data Shows Montana Has 1 in 500 Without Shelter
HUD 2025 Report Details Homelessness In Montana
Recently, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development released its 2025 report on homelessness in America.
Montana might not have the largest homeless population in the country, but it is seeing one of the fastest increases.

Montana Homeless Population Estimated At 2,263 People
One thing the report makes clear is that homelessness isn’t just about people sleeping outside. There’s a difference between being homeless and being unsheltered, and the data breaks that down.
In total, Montana’s homeless population is estimated at 2,263 people. That includes 677 individuals with children. It also includes 141 young people under 25 who are homeless and not in contact with a parent or guardian, and about 160 homeless veterans.
Compared to states like California, which has nearly 182,000 homeless residents, those numbers might not seem huge. But the bigger story is the trend.

1 in 500 Montanans Currently Without Shelter
Since 2007, Montana’s homeless population has increased by 96.8%. That’s nearly double.
With housing costs continuing to climb across the state, it raises the question of whether that trend is going to keep going in the same direction.
Homelessness is a tough and often divisive issue with strong opinions on both sides, but these numbers make it clear this is something that will need real attention moving forward before it gets any worse.
