Missoula Man Arrested After Shooting Himself in the Leg
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On November 25, 2025, at around 7:30 p.m., the Missoula Police Department responded to reports of shots fired on Ryman Street. According to Police Public Information Officer Whitney Bennett, officers located a 27-year-old male who had sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Officers immediately began providing medical care and applied treatment to the wound. The male was transported by officers to a local hospital for further treatment.
The next morning, with the assistance of the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office, the Missoula Police Department said all individuals involved in the shooting incident had been located and interviewed.
On December 2, 27-year-old Robert J. Ward was taken into custody and remanded to the Missoula County Detention Facility on charges for Assault with a Weapon, Tampering with Evidence, and Criminal Endangerment.

“The investigation determined that the involved parties agreed to meet inside a vehicle within the parking structure in the 100 block of W. Main Street for an exchange involving illicit items,” Bennett said. “During the interaction, the parties attempted to withdraw and leave the parking garage. Ward was no longer in the vehicle when the 31-year-old female and 41-year-old male drove northbound on Ryman Street.”
Bennett said Ward then ran toward the departing vehicle, produced a firearm, and discharged multiple rounds in the direction of the vehicle.
“During the incident, Ward also discharged the firearm into his own leg, sustaining an injury,” Bennett said. “He was transported and treated at a local hospital following contact with law enforcement.”
After the scene was secured and the downtown area canvassed, Bennett said K9 Lux was brought in to conduct a search.
“K9 Lux had a change in behavior in the area where the firearm was eventually recovered,” Bennett said. “Following multiple interviews, review of witness statements, and the collection and examination of evidence, MPD detectives obtained a judge-signed warrant for Ward’s arrest.”
Bennett said he was taken into custody without incident.
