The Sheriff and Coroner, Jeremiah Petersen, is releasing the name of the woman who was found deceased on September 3, 2025, in the irrigation waterway near Grant Street and South 6th Street West.

The female has been identified as 38-year-old Leah C. Hartley, of Missoula, Montana.

Anyone who believes they may have information regarding this incident and who has not yet spoken with an officer or detective is asked to contact the Missoula Police Department at (406) 552-6300 reference case #2025-38563.

First Report at 9:19 AM on 09/05/25

Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On September 4, 2025, at 9:52 p.m., the Missoula Police Department reported that a body was located in an irrigation waterway the day before. Police Public Information Officer Whitney Bennett provided the following details. 

“The Missoula Police Department extends our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of a 38-year-old Missoula resident whose body was located yesterday, September 3, in the irrigation waterway near Grant Street and South 6th Street West,” Bennett said. “Patrol officers and detectives responded to the scene, and the body was transported to the Montana State Crime Lab.” 

According to Bennett, a positive identification has been made, and her name will be released by the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office following next of kin notification. 

“The circumstances surrounding her death remain under active investigation,” Bennett said. “Detectives are working to determine the cause of death by gathering information, canvassing the area, conducting interviews, and coordinating with the State Medical Examiner’s Office.”

“As part of our standard investigative practice, the Missoula Police Department treats all unattended deaths with the same thoroughness as a homicide investigation until evidence proves otherwise,” Bennett said. “This approach ensures that every possible avenue is examined and that the cause and circumstances of the death are determined to the fullest extent possible.”
