Montana's natural beauty is undoubtedly a sight for sore eyes. It has caught the attention of both tourists and big-screen producers alike.

Numerous well-known movies and shows have been filmed here that you are probably aware of ( cough... cough.. Yellowstone), but there are also some on this list that you may not have known about!

So sit back, relax, and enjoy these fan favorites filmed in the Big Sky.

What popular movies were filmed in Montana?

Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump jogged his way across the country, changing hearts and minds in 1994. It just so happens two of the running scenes were shot in some of Montana's most iconic landscapes near Glacier Nation Park. The first scene is across a stone-arched bridge, with covered snow peaks in the background. You can find this location near the St. Mary's Entrance to Glacier National Park.

The Revenant

The Revenant is one of my personal favorites because it is based loosely on a true story and makes you realize that your day isn't as bad as it could be. I won't give you any spoilers, but there is quite a lot of suffering for the main character frontiersman Hugh Glass ( Leanardo Dicaprio). The movie features many beautiful mountain scenes, wooded landscapes, and rivers ( In Steps Montana ). One scene in particular, in which Glass jumps into a river in an attempt to flee from the Arikara, was shot at Kootenai Falls.

The River Wild

In 1994, the thrilling action movie "The River Wild" was filmed at Montana's famous Kootenai Falls. Nope, thats not a typo! Meryl Streep stars as a former river guide who takes on the falls and a portion of the Kootenai River that was located on sacred Kootenai Indian land and the specific location was agreed to never be revealed.

The Middle Fork section of the Flathead River between West Glacier and Essex and parts of Glacier National Park were also used in the filming.

The Horse Whisperer

The Horse Whisperer made its debut in 1998. It seems fitting that a movie about horsemanship would be filmed in Montana. However, the movie's first half was filmed in New York. Fortunately, the directors eventually made the right choice and moved the filming to the western state. The Engle Ranch, located an hour outside of Livingston off of Highway 298, was where the production took place. Be sure to slow down and look closely if you drive out that way because you can see the house from the Highway.

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Last but not least, the classic novel turned into a movie, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, which includes scenes in Glacier National Park. How could you not have a magical fairytale land filled with talking animals, mythical creatures, and a winter witch without a Glacier scene? The specific location is Grinnell Point, on the lower eastern peak of Mount Grinnell. Remember, folks, it's not Narnia, it's Montana.
