Wildlife encounters are a part of life in Montana, but every now and then, a sighting comes along that reminds us just how close “wild” can really feel.

A video recently shared on Facebook by the Montana Picker page shows a black bear swimming in a river not far from an angler in a boat. While the exact location of the footage is unknown, the moment serves as a pretty clear reminder that Montana’s rivers, forests, and backcountry are full of surprises, and not all of them stay at a comfortable distance.

In the video, the curious bear enters the water and begins swimming towards an angler in a boat. For a moment, it almost feels like a scene out of a nature documentary, except this one comes with a bit more adrenaline and a lot less narration.

Maybe the bear was just curious, or maybe it was hoping for an easy lunch and checking whether the boat came with snacks. Either way, after its brief swim near the angler, the bear eventually loses interest, turns back toward shore, and runs off into the trees.

Encounters like this are exactly why wildlife officials consistently stress the importance of giving animals plenty of space at all times. Even in or near the water, bears can move quickly and unpredictably. Anyone spending time outdoors in Montana this summer should also carry bear spray and know how to use it before heading out.

It’s the kind of moment that feels rare until you’ve spent enough time outdoors in Big Sky Country. Then you realize it’s not so rare at all. It’s just Montana being Montana.
